Inner State Gallery Presents: SURVIVE Art Exhibition Pop Up Show in Detroit

On June 8th, Inner State Gallery will present SURVIVE for an one-night only, pop-up exhibition in Detroit’s Eastern Market. The traveling exhibition comes to Detroit after a highly successful premier in New Orleans last April. This event is free and open to the public.

SURVIVE is an art exhibition featuring a conceptually coherent and significant, original body of work by emerging artists of the L.A. based graffiti crews LTS KOG featuring artwork by SINER, FISHE, DREYE, KYLE THOMAS, and NATHAN SMITH. The artists work from the same monochromatic palette mixing ink, acrylic, markers, brush, rollers and spray to produce 33 3 x 4 ft. canvasses.

The opening reception is Saturday, June 8, 2013 from SEVEN to ELEVEN. The show runs for one night only, and is located in the Eastern Market at 2431 Orleans St. Detroit, MI 48207.

Social Media guidelines update Chapter 5

I wrote a blog a few weeks ago about the class discussion we had about chapter 5 and Coco Cola and their Social Media Principles. We explored their principles because of how in depth and descriptive they were in order to gain the cooperation of their employees.

I currently work at three different companies and neither of them have provided me with any social media guidelines. Even though one company that I work for has two sentences that states not posting at work activities on your personal social media sites. Yet this statement fails to go into detail on what employees can and cannot do according to the companies rules. At Red Bull a company that I work has recently appointment the captain of the Wings Team to create the social media guidelines for the area that I work in. These guidelines are to be approved by our supervisor before made official. When you think of who writes the guidelines you automatically think of a supervisor or manager but in this case an actual employee was appointed to create the social media guidelines, which is a good idea. This is a great idea because the team captain actually works in the position in which the guidelines will be implemented. She knows what is being done and things that may arise or different situations that we may be put in.

If companies don’t know where to start or how to create guidelines to instruct their employees I think by following Waddington’s DO’s and DON’T’s which state……..

DO

1. Think before you post

2. Add a ‘views are my own’ disclaimer where appropriate.

3. Correct errors openly and in a timely manner.

4. Be respectful.

5. Check privacy settings.

6. Disclose relationships and connections.

7. Regularly check for updates to your organization’s social media.

DON’T

1. Make an audience feel uncomfortable.

2. Bring your organization into disrepute.

3. Reveal company/client sensitive information or intellectual property.

4. Be fake.

Chapter 21 The future of PR education

This chapter discusses two sides of PR, from the point of who actually can do it and are there specific skills needed. There were two questions asked at the beginning of this chapter…..Is public relations a relatively simple craft that anyone with sufficient common sense and experience can practice? Or is it a complex managerial activity that requires lifelong learning. And in my opinion I think the answer to both questions are yes, simply because its all about the individual and the skills they poses.

On one side of PR an individual could just happen to have the creativity and “common sense” to perform different task in PR without having a diploma or any degree. Yet on the other side there may be an individual that may have this passion for PR but has to take courses in PR or just want to improve/enhance their craft. I think the degree and background comes into play when the individual may be seeking for a higher position in PR. Just like we talked about in class when Gina gave examples about her employee vs. the intern and how the intern out-shined the employee because of their passion and desire to work in public relations.

I love the example given in the text that mentions how an employer had followed a student throughout his college education and watched how he shaped his skill and ultimately got hired on with the company. This all happen because he put his self out there and the tools he used may have been more qualified then his degree classification.

So in the end, is it necessary to have a “lifelong learning” of PR or is “common sense” enough to get the job done?

 

Creating Your Brand

These are my takes on creating a personal brand.

I think branding is something that is very important for college students. Especially in your senior year, this is the time where your life changes and you have to make very important decisions. This decisions include choosing a career, buying a car, relocating and planning out your life long future. But it all starts with branding yourself. The definition of branding according to the business dictionary is the process involved in creating a unique name and image for a product in the consumers’ mind, mainly through advertising campaigns with a consistent theme. Branding aims to establish a significant and differentiated presence in the market that attracts and retains loyal customers.

For students in Public Relations and Journalism this is something that can be done so easily. I would break down the definition to relate it to an individual and not a product. The individual is the image and their source of advertising campaigns happens through social media. Using Facebook and Twitter as free advertising and not tweeting and posting irrelevant things. Building your tone on social media or blogs as to who you are and what you aspire to do. Posting what you have done and researching what you would like to learn or do by using individuals that has already done it. Once you have established a significant and differentiated presence on “The Market” “Social Media” then you can retain and advance from your research and networking connections.

An article on mashable.com breaks down the 10 things needed to be successful in your branding endeavors.

1. Business Card- The card should contain your picture, your personal brand statement, as well as your *preferred* contact information and logo if necessary.

2. Resume/Cover Letter/ References Document- Prioritize each document with information custom to the target position. Take your resume online and add social features to it to make the ultimate social media resume, promoting your personal brand to the world and making it shareable.

3. Portfolio- This is something that every PR or Journalist should have, especially when seeking employment. This is a great way to display what you have done and show off your creative skills.

4. Blog/Website- This is something that we are currently working on in class, maintaining a blog and using Wix.com to create a personal website. These links should be on you business cards and other social media sites.

5. LinkedIn Profile- My group had the opportunity to research this site and teach the class what were the benefits of this. This profile is a combination of a resume, cover letter, references document and a moving and living database of your network. Use it to create your own personal advertising, to search for jobs or meet new people.

Chapter 17 Real-Time Public Relations

This chapter made a big impact in our class discussion and students had many different examples to share that related to the text.

In our class discussion of what measurement tools to use in an organization/company to calculate the positive, negative and neutral comments on social media sites about different brands and products. The class was broken up into groups of two’s and we were to come up with different tools/ways to measure the progress of social media. Some groups discussed different measurement tool sites that are made for companies to track the progress on social media, some of them were; Tweetreach, Hootsuite, Google Analytics, and How Sociable. These  Free Social Media Monitoring Tools  are free and low cost that companies and businesses can use to measure their social media activity. It also teaches you ways to increase in brand mentions, the number of conversions directly related to social media efforts and the growth rate of your online community. Businesses should know what they are measuring and why when choosing your social media monitoring tools.

With knowing all of this and monitoring the activity going on on your social media sites it is also VERY important to…..

  • (re)connect PR to the business
  • invest in knowledge, skills and policies
  • define analytic and workflow
  • an appropriate culture
  • rigorous measurement and evaluation.

These points are all essentials to what real-time PR success requires.

In my group we brought up a way to measure a companies product/campaign social media success by measuring time. By comparing your increase and decrease at an earlier time to now. And Gina mentioned how time can be measured in weeks, or even days. Lastly another way to measure social media success would be comparing products/campaigns. This can be done by comparing one product to a newer product and measuring the increase/decrease of one to the other. This helps the company to determine what direction to continue in.

 

10 Ways to Glamorize Graduation and then Document it via Pinterest

With the months leading up to graduation I have been very unenthusiastic about graduating. It could be a result of a lot of things from working three different jobs, constantly driving here and there, or the acne that has invaded my face. But, whatever the reason is I think I have finally found the solution. Over the past six months I have been a avid user of Pinterest. This has became my ultimate go to on “how to categories” and gaining great ideas on what to do in just about any situation. So I came up with the idea of documenting the way I plan to glamorize in the preparation of graduation. I will blog about it and visualize it via Pinterest/Instagram. But I had no clue as to what the top 10 things to do in preparation for graduating and actually being happy about it. So I looked to friends and those of the unknown for advice, whether they were a recent graduate or had great ideas as to what they would do. And here’s what I got……………………

I posed the question on Twitter, Facebook & Instagram using Tweegram. This way I could track the different suggestions and feedback to add to my list of 10 ways to glamorize graduation.

1. Take graduation pictures.

2. Shop for your graduation day outfit.

3. Make a pedicure and manicure appointment.

4. Set a spa day. (just for relaxation)

5. Buy your cap and gown.

6. Bedazzle your cap with something that illustrates who you are.

7. Invite tons of family and friends and send out graduation announcements.

8. Pick a restaurant to dine at after graduation.

9. Plan a graduation party to celebrate your accomplishments. (And to get money)

10. Know what your next steps are from your career to your future endeavors.

All of these things symbolize the top 10 ways to be happy and exited for your accomplishment of graduating with your degree from a college/university.
I will document this list by taking pictures of each thing that I do from the top 10 list via Pinterest and Instagram. My goal of this is to influence other young ladies that may be struggling with finding their excitement for graduation or just for someone who has no idea what to do. Through my Pinterest search of ways to glamorize graduation I did not find many results, with posting my board about this topic it will be able to reach many since it is not a popular topic. I plan to create a follow up piece with this topic that will list “The Things to do to Make sure you will graduate,” from financial aid and audits, etc,.

 

 

 

 

AS-L Case Study for PR Project

In this original post I would like to discuss the process and steps that I am taking to create the event for my AS-L project in Case Studies for Public Relations. Also I will give some details of what the event will consist of. This project requires me to volunteer with a non-profit organization and work with them on a event, fundraiser or visibility campaign. In this process I will be using my PR skills to help plan the event, creating press releases or flyers, and utilizing social media to advertise and post updates about the event.

My non-profit organization is Bethany Christian Services where their mission is to demonstrate the love and compassion of Jesus Christ by protecting and enhancing the lives of children and families through quality social services.  I will be working with youth from ages 14-21 and they will be participating an on campus event, for exposure to different college and career opportunities. The event will start with a campus tour at Eastern Michigan University, followed by a motivational speaker. This speaker will discuss resume building, being professional, and networking skills. Finally the day will end with a ‘Dress for Success Fashion show,’ which will display models in business casual attire and looks to dress professional for work or interviews.

I will utilize all my resources on EMU’s campus in terms of setting up the campus tour, and reserving an auditorium for the speaker and fashion show. Even though this event will not include EMU students I will post and semi-manage Bethany Christian Services social media site to create awareness to the public (EMU) about the “semi-partnership’ with EMU and Bethany Christian Services to help the youth explore bigger and greater opportunities. I will also create a press release and flyer to hand over to EMU’s Echo newspaper to inform them of what is happening on campus. This event will not only benefit me in completing my assignment outline, but will also give me exposure to event planning with a non-profit organization which is my PLN.

Lastly, my goals for Bethany Christians Services and their youth is to……

  • Expose the youth to a college campus setting.
  • Inform youth of higher education opportunities.
  • Create a culture shock, in this widely diverse setting.
  • Display professional dress wear to the youth.
  • Motivate and encourage the youth to take risk and to set goals.
