Creating Your Brand

These are my takes on creating a personal brand.

I think branding is something that is very important for college students. Especially in your senior year, this is the time where your life changes and you have to make very important decisions. This decisions include choosing a career, buying a car, relocating and planning out your life long future. But it all starts with branding yourself. The definition of branding according to the business dictionary is the process involved in creating a unique name and image for a product in the consumers’ mind, mainly through advertising campaigns with a consistent theme. Branding aims to establish a significant and differentiated presence in the market that attracts and retains loyal customers.

For students in Public Relations and Journalism this is something that can be done so easily. I would break down the definition to relate it to an individual and not a product. The individual is the image and their source of advertising campaigns happens through social media. Using Facebook and Twitter as free advertising and not tweeting and posting irrelevant things. Building your tone on social media or blogs as to who you are and what you aspire to do. Posting what you have done and researching what you would like to learn or do by using individuals that has already done it. Once you have established a significant and differentiated presence on “The Market” “Social Media” then you can retain and advance from your research and networking connections.

An article on mashable.com breaks down the 10 things needed to be successful in your branding endeavors.

1. Business Card- The card should contain your picture, your personal brand statement, as well as your *preferred* contact information and logo if necessary.

2. Resume/Cover Letter/ References Document- Prioritize each document with information custom to the target position. Take your resume online and add social features to it to make the ultimate social media resume, promoting your personal brand to the world and making it shareable.

3. Portfolio- This is something that every PR or Journalist should have, especially when seeking employment. This is a great way to display what you have done and show off your creative skills.

4. Blog/Website- This is something that we are currently working on in class, maintaining a blog and using Wix.com to create a personal website. These links should be on you business cards and other social media sites.

5. LinkedIn Profile- My group had the opportunity to research this site and teach the class what were the benefits of this. This profile is a combination of a resume, cover letter, references document and a moving and living database of your network. Use it to create your own personal advertising, to search for jobs or meet new people.
